Yesterday, we visited one of my favorite places in Jacksonville, the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. Students explored the art
elements of line, shape, pattern, and form in a variety of paintings and
sculptures. Explorations included a search for patterns and shapes in an
abstract painting, and a discovery of the characteristics of
three-dimensional art objects. A new studio activity in bookmaking and
collage was part of our visit. Activities in
Art Connections provided an opportunity for extended learning. This tour supported standards in the visual arts, math, and social studies.
Art Connections:
Studio:
(Surprise connection to the polygons we've been reviewing in Math Workshop!)
Gardens:
(See the symmetry in the Italian Garden?)
Galleries:
Bronco Buster by Frederick Remington (1908)
Madonna of Humility with Angels by Agnolo Gaddi (1393)
Abstraction by Rolph Scarlett (1934)
Over the next few weeks, we'll start studying symmetry and congruence in Math Workshop. This field study was perfect timing and gave me some great ideas!
